Inscribed on the title page "To Virginia, with love, Paul." The "Virginia" named here is Virginia Spencer Carr, the biographer of many of the mid-20th century's most famous American authors, including Paul Bowles. Her book, "Paul Bowles: A Life," came out in 2004, five years after Bowles's death.
