Two private photographic collections from South Africa form the basis of this book. The first dates back to the 1850s, the album of a white family built up over several generations. The second comprises the work of two black African photographers, father and son, active during the 1950s and 60s. The blunt juxtaposition suggests the varied ways in which lives lived in different times and places, and under very disparate circumstances, might nevertheless be tied to each other. The images acknowledge the quiet stories taking place at the margins of South Africas history of racial inequality and strife. The book and its research are part of an ongoing collaboration between the authors.
