The "Genius"
New York: John Lane, 1915. Presumed first edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 5.25 x 7.75 in. 736 pp. Fair in three-quarter leather with front exterior hinge split and webbing exposed, rubbing to edges and corners with loss to head of spine, crack along spinal extremity, and some scattered staining to interior pages, including a small burn hole to page 287. Fair. Item #8306
Inscribed on title page by Dreiser with the notation "S.F. (San Francisco) Oct. 1920." This is a presumed first edition, later state, from the copyright page, however, the leather binding instead of the common red leather cloth and the lack of the numbering on page 497 suggests it could potentially be the Canadian first edition or a rebound edition. The publishing history of Dreiser's The "Genius" is of note, given it was removed from circulation by the Society for the Suppression of Vice and wasn't republished/recirculated until 1923.
