AUSTEN, Jane

The Novels and Letters of Jane Austen [Twelve Volume Set of the Chawton Edition]

New York: Frank S. Holby, 1906. First Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. 5.75 x 8.75 in. Occasionally illustrated with color reproductions of bright drawings by C.E. and H.M. Brock, protected by tissue guards with red captioning, all plates present. Very good in original brown cloth-covered boards with fading to top-edge gilt, sunning to spines, minor rubbing to extremities and corners, and age-related discoloration and cracking to pasted-paper title on spines. One spine is cracked of Pride & Prejudice volume one, but binding is holding. Some uncut pages remaining. Still, a lovely, complete set of Austen's writings. Very good. Item #9951

Each edition has a previous owner's signature of E.B. Waddell, likely the spouse of Charles Waddell, an electrical engineer who assisted with the early wiring and heating of Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Additionally, though in the same script as the previous owner's signature, and likely not a personalized gift inscription, in volume 2 of the Letters of Jane Austen, it is noted as a gift from E. Vanderbilt, likely Edith Vanderbilt, the wife of George Vanderbilt who built the estate.

From a limited edition of 1,250 copies, of which this set is number 1115, edited by R. Brimley Johnson and with an introduction by Williams Lyon Phelps. A nice collection of Jane Austen's complete works: Sense and Sensibility. Parts I and II; Pride and Prejudice. Parts I and II; Mansfield Park. Parts I and II; Emma. Parts I and 2; Northanger Abbey; Persuasion; Lady Susan, The Watsons, Letters of Jane Austen. Parts I and II.
